Strabismus, also known as squint, is a condition where both your eyes do not look together in the same direction. So if one of your eyes looks straight ahead, the other turns to point inwards, outwards, upwards or downwards. The turning of the eye may remain constant or it may come and go. Some squints of childhood may be treated with spectacles, but most of them require surgery on the extraocular muscles (muscles that are responsible for eye movements) for correction.
Sudden onset squint should be evaluated on an emergent basis as it may indicate a more serious problem in the brain (stroke, bleed or aneurysm) which is affecting the nerves that supply the extraocular muscles. Uncontrolled Diabetes or Hypertension can also cause sudden onset squint, or muscle palsy by affecting the nerve supply of muscles. They usually recover within a period of 3-4 months.
